United States
The US has no e-invoicing mandate and none coming - no VAT means no tax driver. Adoption is market-driven, and the domestic DBNAlliance network is Peppol-like but not Peppol.

How Recommand serves United States
- Served today with standard Peppol connectivity - no US authority, accreditation or local requirements exist on the Peppol side
- Make your US entity reachable on the network that Europe, Australia and Singapore are standardising on - addressed by DUNS (0060) or EIN (9959)
- US subsidiaries of European groups get Peppol reachability for their EU-side obligations, with nothing to build for the US itself
- No US-specific format work needed - standard Peppol BIS 3.0, with US sales tax carried in the standard tax categories
Frequently asked questions
01Is e-invoicing mandatory in the United States?
No - at no level, and none is planned. The US has no VAT, so there is no tax administration with the motive or authority to mandate invoice rails. Federal agencies must process invoices electronically under OMB memo M-15-19, but supplier obligations arise per agency and contract, not from a blanket statute.
02What is DBNAlliance - and is it Peppol?
DBNAlliance is the voluntary US exchange network that grew out of the Business Payments Coalition and Federal Reserve pilot, live since 2023. It deliberately mirrors Peppol's four-corner architecture and uses OASIS UBL 2.3, but it is a separate network with its own access points and its own registry - a US party on DBNAlliance is not reachable over Peppol, and vice versa. Always confirm which network a counterparty actually uses.
03Why would a US business join Peppol?
Because of everyone else's rules. Europe's mandates phase in through 2026-2030, Australia's government pushes suppliers onto Peppol, and Singapore requires invoice-data transmission over its Peppol-based network by 2031. One Peppol connection covers a US company's European subsidiaries, its exports to mandated markets, and its reachability for foreign trading partners - with nothing to comply with domestically.
04What identifiers do US companies use on Peppol?
US participants register under the DUNS number (scheme 0060) or the US Employer Identification Number (scheme 9959); the Global Location Number (0088) appears as a retail-flavoured fallback. Recommand handles registration and lookup - and helps establish whether a counterparty is on Peppol, DBNAlliance, an EDI network or just a portal, which in the US is the first question to settle.
